School’s out and the summer holidays are officially here! If you’re looking for ways to keep the kids entertained (without resorting to screens), here are five fantastic local adventures to enjoy together – all within easy reach of Berkhamsted.

🐾 1. Whipsnade Zoo
Just a short drive away, Whipsnade Zoo is a guaranteed family favourite. With more than 10,000 animals, daily demonstrations, and even a steam train, there’s enough to keep kids wide-eyed all day long. Pack a picnic or enjoy lunch at one of the cafes – and don’t miss the giraffe platform for an eye-to-eye encounter.

🎬 2. Rex Cinema, Berkhamsted
For a rainy-day treat or a relaxing break from the summer heat, the historic Rex Cinema is a must. It’s not your average movie outing – this beautifully restored art deco cinema offers a magical, old-school experience. Keep an eye out for family matinees or animated classics perfect for little ones.

🌳 3. Explore Chess Valley
Lace up your walking shoes and take the kids on a nature trail through the picturesque Chess Valley. There are gentle riverside walks, perfect picnic spots, and plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife (including the odd heron or kingfisher). It’s an easy way to get some fresh air and stretch those legs.

🚂 4. Hop into London – It’s Only 32 Minutes Away
Don’t forget how easy it is to reach the capital from Berkhamsted – just 32 minutes on the train and you’re in the heart of London. From the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum to playgrounds in Hyde Park and a ride on the London Eye, a day out in the city is both fun and educational.

🌼 5. Ashridge Estate Adventures
Right on our doorstep, Ashridge is the perfect place for summer exploration. Kids can climb trees, run wild in the meadows, or take part in one of the National Trust’s organised activities. And if you’re lucky, you might spot a deer or two!

Wherever you go this summer, we hope you make the most of the sunshine, slow moments, and family time.
